About the John Jay French Museum:
This Greek-revival style home dates to 1845, when merchant John Jay French built it as his home, along with a trading post and tannery. The historic home provides a glimpse of life in East Texas in the 19th century.
Included in the museum are antique furnishings, clothing and pioneer household utensils from the time period of the French family's residence, 1845-1865. Outbuildings include a blacksmith shop, tannery, privy and smokehouse.
The original building was the first painted house and first two-story house in Beaumont, and is the oldest-surviving home in Beaumont today.
The John Jay French Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Reservations are required for group and school tours. Coffee, lemonade and Sallie’s cookies may be furnished upon request with reservations. There is a small admission charge.
