About Cascade Caverns:
Cascade Caverns is not as large as some of the other show caves in Central Texas, nor does it boast the spectacular living formations that some other caves in Central Texas offer. But a tour of Cascade Caverns does take the visitor to a large room with an underground pool.
It's what once flowed into that underground pool of water that gave the cavern its name: a 100-foot-tall waterfall. Today, the falls only "cascades" in periods of very heavy rain. However, the tour guide does flip a switch to generate a flow of water, giving visitors a glimpse of what the natural flowing falls would have looked (and sounded) like.
The temperature inside Cascade Caverns is 68F yearround. Visitors should wear non-slip shoes because the cavern floor is wet with condensation. There is a gift shop adjacent to the caverns, which are inside a 105-acre park that offers picnicking opportunities.
Tours last around 45 minutes and leave every 30 minutes. Cascade Caverns is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the remainder the of the year. There is an admission fee.
