About the Gladys Porter Zoo:
One of the better zoos in Texas, the Gladys Porter Zoo is located on 31 acres and includes concession stands and a gift shop. More than 1,500 animals are housed here, representing around 400 species - 47 of which are endangered.
The zoo is organized in four geographical motifs: Tropical America, Indo-Australia, Asia and Africa. Animals native to each area are displayed in their respective part of the zoo.
There are several other areas of the zoo that are not organized geographically: the children's zoo and nursery, a Herpetarium (snakes!) and aquatic wing, a free-flight aviary, bear grottos and a California sea lion exhibit.
The zoo is open daily yearround, beginning at 9 a.m. Admissions close at 5 p.m., but once in the zoo visitors can stay until just before dusk. Admission fees apply.
