About the World's Largest Jack Rabbit:
The can't-miss photo opportunity is Odessa is in front of the giant jackrabbit. "The World's Largest Jack Rabbit," to be specific.
The 8-foot-tall fiberglass statue of a jackrabbit is at the corner of North Sam Houston and 8th streets. It was erected in 1962 with the backing of onetime United States attorney general John Ben Shepperd, who was then president of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. And that's why the "rabbit" of the statue is named Jack Ben Rabbit.
After a "rabbit napping" was attempted in 1997, the statue was bolted down in front of the Ector County Independent School District building.
