About the SPJST Czech Heritage Museum:
The official name of this museum is actually the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, but everyone knows it better as the Czech Heritage Museum. It is located in the basement of the main offices of the SPJST building, and has been open since 1971. (SPJST, by the way, stands for Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas; it is a fraternal organization that does community work and offers insurance and other benefits to members.)
The museum is dedicated to the history of the Czech culture, and not just in this part of Texas. Its library contains around 23,000 volumes, 18,000 of which are written in the Czech language.
The SPJST Museum/Czech Heritage Museum traces the early days of Czech settlement in Texas through historical artifacts, photos and documents. Other displays include a large collection of Czech dolls, including some donated by the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C.
The Czech Heritage Museum is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., except for the hour between noon and 1 p.m. The museum is closed weekends and holidays except by appointment. Admission is free.
