Del Rio is in west Texas, along the Rio Grande River. It is, in fact, midway between Padre Island National Seashore and Big Bend National Park - which is a heck of a long drive.
The city of approximately 50,000 citizens is just south of Lake Amistad, a huge reservoir known for its great fishing, and just west of the huge Laughlin Air Force Base.
The International Bridge connects Texas to Mexico at Del Rio. Just across the border is the Mexican city of Ciudad Acuna, where visitors will find restaurants, nightclubs and shopping.
The Amistad National Recreational Area, around Lake Amistad, includes prehistoric Native American drawings. The area is great for boaters, campers, hikers and fishermen. The lake is also a great place for birdwatching. Other outdoor activities await at Devils River State Natural Area and Seminole Canyon State Historical Park.
Del Rio is in a semi-arid part of Texas, but the San Felipe Springs pours forth 150 million gallons of water a day.
The Val Verde Winery is the oldest winery in Texas, and visitors are welcome. The Whitehead Memorial Museum is dedicated to the history of the Southwest. The famed Judge Roy Bean is buried on the museum grounds. The Judge Roy Bean visitor center is in Langtry, 60 miles away.
