El Paso is one of the largest cities in Texas, and it is the largest U.S. city along the U.S.-Mexico border. El Paso's neighbor across the border is Juarez, Mexico, and together the metropolitan area of the two cities includes more than 2 million residents.
El Paso is very near the western tip of Texas and just south of New Mexico. The city covers a large geographical area, and the geography includes both mountains and desert. Franklin Mountains State Park extends well into the city proper. In fact, the city - which dates to Spanish missions from the 16th century - sits in a valley between mountain peaks.
El Paso's cultural heritage is rich with Spanish influences, and interaction with its neighbors across the Rio Grande River in Mexico is constant. The University of Texas at El Paso provides opportunities for learning, plus major college sports games for sports fans. Professional baseball, soccer and hockey are also played in the city.
Spanish missions and several nice museums are drawing cards, and the U.S. Army's Fort Bliss also calls the El Paso area home.
